People are reluctant to admit one significant benefit of obtaining a college or university degree: they will attract, and probably marry, somebody equally well-educated.
This is for a multitude of reasons. During your prime, you'll be surrounded by people also doing higher education and will continue to exist in those circles throughout your life. You'll also have more in common with these people - an oft-valued trait in a life partner.
Therefore, the reward for a university qualification is even higher than most measures suggest because the person's partner will also have a higher average income. And, for as long as the gender earnings gap persists, women are better off than men.
Another benefit to doing a pointless degree and spending money to learn almost nothing. You get to hang out with the future wealthy and genuinely fall in love, never feeling like you chose your partner for the money (but we both know).
